Middle Ear Studio resides in the basement of a 1950s South Portland ranch. It consists of a tracking room, control room and and a huge variety of musical instruments, noisemakers and recording gear. The attached house offers a lovely upright piano, and extra tracking space. Take a look around, and make yourself at home.
We have an ever-evolving stock of instruments and gear in the studio at any time. Take a look through our gallery at some of our featured pieces. Not seeing what you're looking for? Talk to us - we may be able to find it for you!
We love working with all kinds of music, from acoustic folkies to psych-rockers and everything in between. Here's just a few of the people we've been working with in the studio lately - check them out!
From the first-ever official Middle Ear Studio release Highways and Area Codes, Breathe Easy captures Mark at his best. Making this record with Mark was about as collaborative as it can get. Mark not only helped me build most of the studio itself, but he also is a talented luthier who personally set up most of the instruments in the room today. Mark and I poured our heart and sould into the studio and then this record, and you can feel the love all over the album. Check it out here. Tracked and mixed at The Middle Ear.
Friends of the studio Snughouse made their first EP with The Middle Ear shortly after we opened shop, and they have been out crushing it all over Portland, Maine ever since. Go check out the harmoniiiieees, man... Here's my personal favorite summer jam, Come Summertime. Check out the whole record here: https://snughouse.bandcamp.com/ Tracked and Mixed at The Middle Ear. Mastered by Patrick Keane (patkeanemastering.com)
From an upcoming vinyl release by Madou Diara and Dakan, Kunlandjan was recorded at Hotel2Tango in Montreal by Howard Bilerman and mixed here at Middle Ear Studios. These tracks were the maiden voyage for the studio's Lexicon PCM60 and Alesis MidiVerb II and they were the sole reverbs used to mix this album, with a little delay assistance from the Roland Space Echo. I had a TON of fun mixing this record, with no small thanks to the beautiful enginnering of Mr. Bilerman. This is the second record Madou has released with Bronze Age Records. The first was a solo voice and ngoni recording that can be found here: https://bronzeagerecords.com/music/madou-diarra/ Tracked at Hotel2Tango (https://www.hotel2tango.com/), Mixed at The Middle Ear, Mastered By Ryan Morey (https://www.ryanmoreymastering.com/)
From an upcoming vinyl release by Dan Venes' Dead Broke, this record was recorded in a sea-side trailer in Herne Bay, Kent and mixed right here in South Portland, Maine. Garagey and heavy as hell, this record gave me the opportunity to really dive into the Space Hammond reverb tank and fool around with a lot of real-deal-reel-to-reel slapback delay. I had a lot of fun mixing this record - keep an eye out for it on vinyl and digital formats very very soon!
If you don't know Dan Knudsen, you need to know. A staple of the Portland, ME scene, Dan has been making music in Maine since 2000 and is truly a one-of-a-kind artist. Ian first heard Dan at the Dogfish Open Mic back in 2015, and was thrilled and honored for the opportunity to record his latest EP. Check it out, along with the rest of his massive discography here: http://www.danknudsenmusic.com/ Tracked and Mixed at The MIddle Ear.
Recorded live around one microphone to 2-track 1/4" tape, here's another one from Mark Toolan's Highways and Area Codes. Mark was able to fulfill his childhood dream of seeing the reel-to-reel spinning in the background as he records. We had fun on this one. Check out the rest of record here: https://marktoolan.bandcamp.com/album/highways-and-area-codes Tracked and mixed at The Middle Ear.
Just one of many rock and roll gems from the mind of poet and earworm-weaver Loren Poin of Glue. Recorded to 2" 16-track tape, and live mixed to 1/2" 2-track at The Fry Pharmacy in Old Hickory, TN, this record was a constant blast to make. For this one, we built the track off a pitch-shifted tape loop. Many thanks to brilliant enginner and producer Scott McEwen for the use of his very fine studio space. Another Loren Poin classic, this track was also recorded and live-mixed at the Fry Pharmacy sessions in Old Hickory, TN. Keep an eye out in the neat future for another Poin-Hundt team up! Tracked and mixed at Fry Pharmacy by The Middle Ear.
Recorded at the Middle Ear's first studio space in Portland at Base Camp Studios: https://www.facebook.com/basecampmaine/ When Ian first moved to Portland from Nashville, he met Shannon almost immediately who had been considering moving to Nashville to persue his music. Naturally, they split the difference and made a record in Portland. A southern heart from the deep north, check out Shannon's Maine-country sound on this track, and enjoy the rest of the record here: https://soundcloud.com/user-760597725 Special thanks to the Trader Joe's horn section.
